The Master of Public Health Program in Urban Health at Northeastern University is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach a Social Epidemiology course for the Fall 2010 semester. This Social Epidemiology course is a graduate level, 3-hour seminar course for MPH students and other interested graduate students. Expected enrollment is 12-18 students.
It is held on Tuesday evenings from 5-7:30 p.m., September 14-December 14 on the Northeastern main campus on Huntington Avenue in Boston.
Instruction will involve preparing lectures, structuring discussion, evaluating students, and conducting other tasks to successfully teach the course as an adjunct professor. Interested candidates should have a graduate degree (doctorate preferred) in social epidemiology, epidemiology, health behavior/health education, sociology, or a related field; and should demonstrate proficiency, training, and interest in social epidemiology and the social determinants of health. Compensation is $4,125.00 for the semester. Course Description
Social Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health in populations, related to the social and economic determinants of health. This graduate course at Northeastern University offers a seminar in Social Epidemiology, including theories, patterns, and controversies, as well as programs and policies that can be applied to address population health inequalities. Each week, readings will include articles that will discuss how different, multilevel dimensions of inequality influence health outcomes, including socioeconomic position; race, racism, & discrimination; immigration; gender; lifecourse & developmental science; biological pathways; social relationships; housing & neighborhood context; residential segregation; corporate social responsibility; ethics. Student performance is assessed with weekly reflections; papers; class discussion; and a digital story presentation.
